TWELVE

My sister wasn’t normally one for drama, and I was worried. I jumped up. I opened the door to run to the bookstore and slammed into Lizzie. I hit her so hard I had to reach out and stop her from falling.

I took her hand and guided her inside.

“What’s wrong?” I looked her over from head to toe.

She shut the door and then waved her hand. “I’m fine. I’m fine. I texted you as I was leaving the shop, and then it felt like someone was watching as I came out of the store. So, I ran home.”

I’d experienced the same thing.

“You know when the little hairs go on your neck, but no one is around. Weird. I think I freaked myself out after everything Brenna told us.”

I didn’t want to scare her by saying I felt the same way earlier.

“That is scary. Are you sure there wasn’t someone else around?”

She shook her head. “It wasn’t until I was in our garden that it stopped. Do you think maybe there are more secret doors or windows or something? Maybe someone was watching me? I sound crazy.”

I chuckled. “You don’t. Knowing this place, there probably are several. But you’re safe and at home. Tell me what the what happened message was about.”

She followed me to the kitchen. She washed her hands, and then donned her apron. Then she started preparing a meal. I had no idea how she just did that so unconsciously, gathering ingredients and chopping vegetables. It was second nature to her.

“Scott has been in Dublin, but he stopped by the store earlier. He wants us to come to the pub quiz tonight. He says there is not a more important event in town and that it’s a great way to meet the locals.”

I wasn’t much for those kinds of games, though I wasn’t terrible at them. I knew a little about a lot of different things. But I wasn’t much of an expert at anything.

“Your text sounded like more than that.”

“Well, as he was leaving, he ran into Linda. They were pointing fingers at one another and shouting really loud in the middle of the sidewalk.”

“Did you hear what they were saying?”

She shook her head. “I had a few customers I was checking out before I closed. The only thing I heard was food and secrets. Do you think it has something to do with the judge?”

I shrugged. “No idea. Do you need my help with anything?” She put the vegetables she’d been cutting in a big pot.

She glanced over her shoulder and made a funny face. “No offense, it goes faster without you.”

“Harsh.”

We laughed.

“I’m making a veggie soup. Mom’s recipe.”

“I’m all about the comfort food,” I said. “But what’s really going on in your head?”

After adding broth, spices, and water, she stirred the pot. My sister cooked our mom’s recipes when she was upset about things, which was why I’d gained a good ten pounds in the last six months.

“This whole thing that one of our neighbors might be a murderer is getting to me,” she said softly.
